State of emergency declared in city in Michigan after children are found to have double the normal level of lead in their blood from drinking contaminated tap water

A city in Michigan has declared a state of emergency after children were found to have rocketing levels of lead in their blood from drinking contaminated tap water.

Flint mayor Karen Weaver last night brought in the emergency measure, saying lead exposure was causing irreversible damage in children and would lead to some having learning difficulties.

Officials have told residents – who have long complained about the state of the city’s water – not to drink unfiltered tap water.

The city switched from Detroit’s water system last year to Flint River water in a cost-cutting move which has now been branded a ‘man-made disaster’.

・ All children under the age of six – between 8,000 and 9,000 of them – have been put in jeopardy by Flint’s contaminated water.

・ City and state officials repeatedly declared the water was safe and refused to switch back to the safer lake supply until October 2015, shortly after Hanna-Attisha revealed that new tests showed alarming levels of lead in the blood of the city’s youngest children, at an age that makes them particularly vulnerable to such poisoning.
