・ Protesters who gathered in Hiroshima (and are planning to repeat their demonstrations in Nagasaki on Sunday) object to Mr Abe’s reinterpretation of a pacifist constitution, but acknowledge that the document was written for Japan by the nation that dropped those atomic bombs.
“Of course we know that Japan’s pacifism is complicated and the atom bomb makes it easier to just think of Japan as the victim,” says Reiko Ogawa, one of several housewives gathered around a protest truck outside the Peace Park in Hiroshima. “ But pacifism is not outdated. We seem to have a prime minister who thinks so.”
・ Tomorrow and next week, Mr Abe must weave delicate diplomacy around his own nationalism and hawkishness. In an omission that many saw as significant, the prime minister delivered his speech at Thursday’s Hiroshima anniversary without repeating Japan’s longstanding vow not to own nuclear weapons, produce them or allow them to be transported by others on to Japanese soil.
No Japanese prime minister has left the line out since they began automatically attending the Hiroshima anniversaries in 1994. In a hasty statement to parliament on Friday, Mr Abe said he would abide by the three principles, and would include the wording in the Nagasaki speech on Sunday.
