　原子力発電環境整備機構（ＮＵＭＯ）の河田東海夫（とみお）フェローは２４日、原子力委員会の定例会で、チェルノブイリ原発事故で居住禁止となった区域と同レベルの土壌汚染が、福島県内で約６００平方キロにわたり広がっているとの推計値を報告した。河田氏は「大規模な土壌改良が不可欠だ」との見解を示した。

　Radioactive soil in areas near Japan's crippled nuclear plant have reached the same level as Chernobyl, where a "dead zone" remains 25 years after the reactor in the former Soviet Union exploded. Soil samples in areas outside the 12-mile exclusion zone around the Fukushima plant measured more than 1.48 million becquerels a square meter, the standard used for evacuating residents after the Chernobyl accident, said Tomio Kawata, a fellow at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan.
　Radiation from the plant has spread over 230 square miles, the report said.
